You are required to produce a range of writing and during the year we will look at several pieces you create. At least two of these must reach the standard for you to achieve the writing credits in English - 6 in total.
Some of the tasks below may be done - some may not, some are still to be generated.
Included are some exemplars from the NZQA website to give you an idea of what is expected. Note using language for effect is important
The Argyle Sweater
from The Argyle Sweater website - cartoon by Scott Hillburn
Task A This involves writing an expressive piece which involves thinking back to some key moment, describing it in some detail and reflecting on ideas the memory may have links to.
This list of topics have New Zealand "flavour". If any appeal to you then you might spend an hour writing these if the teacher sets aside time for this in class
This is a second topic for an opinion piece done in the same way as the Childhood writing task. This topic is about Women today. The things we are exploring are issues such as whether or not the 'Women's lib' movement is till alive and well. Has the drive for feminine equality left us with more problems than it started with? Have women made progress in the world in terms of power, fair treatment, the ability to make choices and live fulfilling lives? Below are a range of articles which reflect some current thinking, and there will be more in class in hard copy from magazines and newspapers. You are free to find your own sources too but you must acknowledge where you are finding your quotes and please share with the class. Your teacher may require you to provide the article for cross referencing.
The May exam will consist of a three hour session in which you will write on a topic linked to your literature text/ completing the topic started in the lessons prior to the exam.
These topics will differ for every class. You will be given one or two lessons prior to the exam to brainstorm your ideas in your portfolio book. This book will then be handed out in the exam and you will write the essay to the best quality level you can. Dictionaries will be allowed in the room. There will be a short re-submission opportunity after the exam but no more than two hours in length.
Further writing opportunities may be given depending on the class and topics arising from work done.
The intention is to complete the Writing Portfolio and grade students by the end of Term 2
